Want a taste?
Want to keep it?
Here's how it happened for me:

My parents had a music room.
The walls were filled with hanging guitars, a mandolin, and a
banjo. Along the west wall was an old organ and occupying the
east wall was a rowdy, small piano (that sounded like the one
that kicks off "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La Da"). The master of ceremonies
in that room was a record player, flanked by gobs of vinyl records.
The Beatles, Paul Simon, Steely Dan, Harry Nilsson,
Stevie Wonder, Chicago Transit Authority and countless others
provided the soundtrack to my childhood. In that magical music
room, I sat transfixed for hours at a time with giant headphones
mounted to my small kid head, basking in the sonic wonder.
I sang along and banged on pots and pans. Many times, I would
just listen, absorbing all the sounds and nuances. I feasted on
songs like "Coconut"– I didn't understand at age 5 why I liked it
so much but it's groovy, understated rhythm with a continual
C7 chord and goofy voices had me hooked. When I got a little
older, I used the loud piano in that room to figure out Chicago's
"Colour My World."I was smitten with all the major 7 chords
and perpetual key changes in that song;I'm fully aware how geeky
that is. I really liked how music made me feel. The sunny,
nostalgic vibe of "Kodachrome"by Paul Simon made me happy
while Nilsson's "Everybody's Talkin'"made me melancholy. Then
there was the groove: songs like "Josie"and "I Wish"(Steely Dan,
Stevie Wonder) were lessons in Grooveology 101 and made it
impossible for me to sit still. When our family got a tape recorder,
I recruited the neighborhood kids to sit in the music room with
me, singing and playing percussion instruments into the recorder
while the records played. Eventually, the music room spewed me
forth. I went to college to study music theory and composition,
started writing whenever I could, and played and sang in assorted
groups, choirs, bands, ensembles, outfits, and posses. And now, at
age (?), I'm still doing what I love. Music is powerful stuff. It
moves us, transports us, changes us, and forms the soundtrack to
our lives. I'd be honored if one of my songs moves or changes you.
Or even just stays in your head and drives you nuts.

Thanks for listening.

Hello

The one thing I do, however, is to forget what is behind me and do
my best to reach what is ahead. Phillipians 3:13 GNT

Hello I'm the new guy you've never met
It's time to leave your past
Get up off of the ground and fix your eyes
On stuff that's gonna last

Leave all your troubles behind you
Let the music soak down to your soul
Go find somebody who loves you
Let them tell you everything 's gonna be alright

Hello I'm the new guy you've never met
It's time to leave your past
Get up off of the ground and fix your eyes
On stuff that's gonna last

Leave all your worries behind you
Let the music take you to the sky
Today has new possibilities
And you know tomorrow there'll be even more

Hello I'm the new guy you've never met
It's time to leave your past
Get up off of the ground and fix your eyes
On stuff that's gonna last

Molly

Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God
like a child shall not enter it. Mark 10:15 ESV

Molly's high – no I don't mean that way
Because this is so rare, we look up, gawk and stare
Our mouths are wide, our eyes are fully glazed
This is how we live

Every day we come from near and far
We show up just past two, to see what Molly's gonna do
And every day, she takes a running start
And we hear her say:

"First don't look, and next just jump, and last you'll fly away

Some may say that Molly doesn't care
She's foolish and unwise – that's what we used to surmise
But truth be told – Molly's only 6 year's old
And she's not afraid

First don't look, and next just jump, and last you'll fly away

And we say, "Oh no – that's probably too high"
Because we've never been that high before
And she says, "Oh no – that's not high enough
Don't you see that man below – he won't drop me."

Molly's right – her dad is pretty strong
His arms are made of rock and he's been doing this so long
Then one day he calls out all our names
"Would you like a try?"

And on that day our town began to split
Half of us climbed up and the other half just split
And as we ran their eyes were fully glazed
This is how we live

First don't look, and next just jump, and last you'll fly away

Rest of Your Life

What's there to show for a lifetime of work, a lifetime of working
your fingers to the bone? Ecclesiastes 1:3 MSG

Are you glad that your time is through?
You've done all we've asked you to do
And now the Company thanks you, yeah, we really thank you

Even though there's much to be done
We insist you have some fun
And have we told you we'll miss you, yeah, we'll surely miss you

And may your dreams be sweet
As you stumble as stay asleep for the rest of your life

Many thanks for all of your time
We're so glad you stayed on our side
Go south and lay in the sunshine and hang with your own kind

It's the sacrifice that you made
That will let you live in the shade
And now if you'll please excuse us, goodbye and good luck

And may your dreams be sweet
As you stumble as stay asleep for the rest of your life

Get Your Groove On While We Still Have Sun

Each of you has received a gift to use to serve others. Be good
servants of God's various gifts of grace. 1 Peter 4:10 NVC

Wake up, your dreams are gone
It happened with your TV on
They grew wings and flew right out your door
You've been sleeping, working but never really living
Every day's the same as before

But lately you don't feel too well
It's easier to sit and dwell
On days, weeks, months, years, and every kind of regret
And all the time that you have lost

Even though there are days that you can't have back
Now's the time to move on
Here you are – this is a different day
Get your groove on while we still have sun

Rise up in spite of fear
Don't need a smiley fake veneer
Be real, because it still will be hard
Why don't you go 'head find a way, get your passion back from yesterday
You know it's gonna be worth it all

But lately you don't feel too well
It's easier to sit and dwell
On seconds, minutes, week, months, years, and regrets
And all the time that you have lost

Even though there are days that you can't have back
Now's the time to move on
Here you are – this is a different day
Get your groove on while we still have sun

Make a firm decision that you won't let indecision rule your life
Go and write your story, then give away the glory
It's alright

Don't let your doubts have say on what you're going to do today
Give yourself permission to fall

Even though there are days that you cannot have back
Now's the time to move on
Here you are – this is a different day
Get your groove on while we still have sun

The One I Love

A bowl of vegetables with someone you love is better than steak
with someone you hate. Proverbs 15:17

I was just a poor boy with a dog and goofy shoes
Waiting for the next day to arrive
You were only 19 and your world was crashing down
But through it all you managed to survive

I was way too confident and you were too unsure
But still we thought the other one was alright
Alright turned into pretty good, turned into might fine
To "Where have you been hiding my all my life?"

We fell in love, we fell in love

Still I wonder why you didn't run away when you found me out
I guess that lots of grace and unconditional love
Is what it's all about

20 years go flying by and we're still having fun
You're my audience and I'm your clown
And when the laughter turns to tears and everything is wrong
We hold each other and we stick around

We stayed in love, we stayed in love

Still you wonder why I didn't run away when I found you out
I guess that lots of grace and unconditional love
Is what it's all about

When we're old and on the porch and sipping lemonade
Gently rocking in the setting sun
If by some chance you and I forget each other's name
I will still remember you're the one

The one I love, the one I love

Make it Better

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children
of God. Matthew 5:9 KJV

She's in the kitchen baking for her man
She's trying to tell him that she understands
And she wants to make it better

He stops to buy some flowers Friday night
He tells her gently that he knows she's right
And he wants to make it, he needs to make it better now

If you and me don't see the same
It's too late tomorrow, let's work it out today
Oh please don't let this moment slip away

If I forget and come on way too strong
Please don't pretend that there is nothing wrong
Because I want to make it better

If you offend me with the words you say
I promise that I'll tell you right away
Yeah we want to make it, we need to make it better now

If you and me don't see the same
It's too late tomorrow, let's work it out today
Oh please don't let this moment slip away

If you and me just can't agree
Know that I still love you and that will never change
No, I won't let my pride get in the way

If there's a fight that threatens to divide
You gotta know that I am on your side
Yeah we want to make it, we need to make it
I want to make it, got to make it
Want to make it, we need to make it better now

Beautiful

People who try to save their lives will lose them, and those who
lose their lives will save them. Luke 17:33 CEV

So beautiful to see somebody doing the right thing even though they're afraid
And you know that deep inside of us all we want to be brave

So typical to be somebody who's playing it safe and staying the same
And you know that deep inside of us all we want to be changed

Beautiful

So wonderful to watch somebody reach down and lift up those suffering in pain
And you know we want to go and find who's hurting today

So gradual becoming somebody who's living their whole life to give it away
And you know that when we give up ourselves there's so much to gain

Beautiful

So beautiful to see somebody doing the right thing even though they're afraid
And you know that deep inside of us all we want to be brave

Ocean

You are the salt of the earth. Matthew 5:13 NASB

So our plans are a drop in the ocean
But our dreams are as deep as the sea
And this bottomless trench that we've started across
Has a current of uncertainty

Well we picked up our crew in the harbor
And we gathered our children and wives
Then we fashioned this ship and we all climbed aboard
And that's where we've spent half our lives

Years go by and our hearts cry "I love you more."
Up and down the whitecaps pound our bow
Tide rolls in;we find we've been the salt of the earth
In this Ocean

Well sometimes the calm overtakes us
And our boat sits as still as a stone
So we stand on the deck and we pray for the breeze
Then we pick up our oars and we row

Our vessel can easily wander
But the stars have been carefully placed
So we end our tears and drown out our fears
And trust we'll discover our way

Years go by and our hearts cry "I love you more."
Up and down the whitecaps pound our bow
Tide rolls in;we find we've been the salt of the earth
In this Ocean

We've taken our trips below the surface
And we've lost men who've drowned in the waves
But the breakers that crash they don't scare me no more
Behind them's a power that saves

So we set our course for the horizon
Great Maker of Wind be our guide
We'll take up our oars and unfurl our sails
And over this Ocean we'll ride

Years go by and our hearts cry "I love you more."
Up and down the whitecaps pound our bow
Tide rolls in;we find we've been the salt of the earth
In this Ocean

Love

Let brotherly love remain. Hebrews 13:1 YLT

When you get down to it everybody is the same
Strip away the non-sense and the games that we all play
Each and every one of us can't seem to get enough
Each and every one of us could use a lot more love

Is it any wonder that we're full of angst and fear
Put some love inside us and that stuff will disappear
I don't want my heart to shrivel up and turn to stone
I don't want to live my live life cut off and alone

Love's the solution for the deep and anguished cry
Love is the answer – it's what is keeping us alive

When we suck our last breath we won't care how much we made
All that we accomplished soon forgotten when we fade
What they will remember is how good we made them feel
Leave behind a legacy of love that's not concealed

Love's the solution for the deep and anguished cry
Love is the answer – it's what is keeping us alive

It's love
It's love
It's love

When you get down to it everybody is the same
Strip away the non-sense and the games that we all play
Each and every one of us can't seem to get enough
Each and every one of us could use a lot more love

Love's the solution for the deep and anguished cry
Love is the answer – it's what is keeping us alive

Freely Fall Down

Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights.
No one said a word to him, because they saw how great his suffering was.
Job 2:13 NIV1984

Rest your weary head upon my chest
Cry a million tears and don't hold back
Freely fall down, freely fall down

When it gets too hard to take a breath
I will breathe for you when there's no air left
Freely fall down, freely fall down

There is no need to try to put a strong and brave face on
Let all the rain pour out and freely fall down
